Leaves & Members - Hojas y miembros

This past week, my companion and I, along with some other missionaries, helped rake leaves for some people. As I was working with the members (of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) around me, I realized how important it is to work as members and missionaries, together. No one can do God's work alone. We need Him and we need to work together.

Christ in the Book of Mormon - Cristo en El Libro de Mormón

My Book of Mormon
Our mission president has challenged us to read the entire Book of Mormon before the next General Conference (in just under 6 months) and mark all references to Christ. At first, I was a little sad because I had done it before my mission and I was trying to read the Book of Mormon in Spanish. Then, I got really excited because I realized I can do it in SPANISH! So, I began where I had left off in my personal study of the Book of Mormon. I took a yellow highlighter to add to my group of colorful pens (used to mark other things) to mark all references to Christ. I was amazed, as I began, how often Christ appears in the Book of Mormon. Yes, I did it in English but, it was with a red pen which did not stand out as much as the neon yellow highlighter. This experience has increased my testimony of the Book of Mormon being another testament of Jesus Christ. The pages are full of references to Him. When we follow Christ, we are obeying the words of God. I know the Book of Mormon is of God and contains guidance for us to return to live with God. And, through this book, I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet and that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the church of Jesus Christ on the earth (See Introduction).

My Book of Mormon

He Will Give Us Rest

A few days ago I posted a picture on facebook and received a comment from my father commenting on the word "rest." This comment has led me to reflect on this word: rest.

Greg Olsen picture from Facebook
In Enos 1:27, it says, "And I soon go to the place of my rest, which is with my Redeemer; for I know that in him I shall rest. And I rejoice in the day when my mortal shall put on immortality, and shall stand before him; then shall I see his face with pleasure, and he will say unto me: Come unto me, ye blessed, there is a place prepared for you in the mansions of my Father. Amen."

Also, Matthew 11:28 says, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

After reading these verses, I thought once again about that word: rest. This led me to the Topical Guide in the back of our King James Bible, that says, under "rest" these words: purpose of earth, paradise, peace, quietness, Sabbath. The ones that most stuck out to me were quietness and peace.

The word peace made me think of when Christ, talking with his disciples, said, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

This verse has always touched me and made me think of how we truly can find peace through Christ during hard times or when this world seems to be over crowding us.

I then returned the the Topical Guide but, this time, looked up peace. Under this word, it had two words that stuck out to me: order and silence. Silence made me think of the temple and how we can go there to find peace and receive rest from our trials and the world around us. I know when we go to places where we can feel the spirit of the Lord, we can find peace and rest. The quiet places in the world can be where we can gain the most guidance from God for our lives so that we live according to His will. I hope I can always return to those places of peace to be able to find rest in the Lord.

A Gift

In this past General Conference, Russell M. Nelson, a member of the quorum of the 12, said,

"The aging process is also a gift from God, as is death. The eventual death of your mortal body is essential to God's plan of happiness. Why? Because death will allow your spirit to return home to Him. From an eternal perspective, death is only premature for those who are not prepared to meet God."

lds.org
This quote struck me. Usually when we think of death, it is full of fear or sadness. This quote brings it into another light. Death still is a sad thing for us on the earth because we miss those people who are gone but, through God, it can be viewed as something positive as well.

A gift

When I think of gifts I usually think of birthdays, Christmas, or things of that nature. I do not usually think of aging or death but, when you think about how we get to return to live with God after gaining experience, it really is a gift for us. We are able to learn and grow so, "whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection. And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come." (Doctrine and Covenants 130:18-19) Think of it: we are on this earth and able to learn more so we can continue to become more like God. It is such a beautiful gift!

I do understand that death is hard. People I know have passed away and it is hard to deal with because you do miss them a lot and many things remind you of them but, I also know that when we turn to the Lord and try to see the positive (they are no longer in pain, they are with God, etc) it is easier to cope and we are able to draw closer to God and learn of Him and trust in Him.

I experienced this this past Spring when a family member passed away. I questioned what I believed but, continued to try and turn to Christ. Through that experience, I have come to more fully rely on Christ and believe in Him. I now know that I do know that there is a life after death and that we can live with our loved ones for ever. We can return to live with God again and we can find peace.

Young Women's Values - Valores de las Mujeres Jóvenes

The Young Women's theme was always beautiful to me but, as I began my mission and realized I could not say it with the young women in the Spanish ward I am serving in, I found even more meaning behind it. As we recite this theme, it brings us all together with one purpose and helps us all remember we are daughters of God and we will follow Him.

lds.org
WE ARE DAUGHTERS of a Heavenly Father who loves us and we love Him. WE WILL "STAND as
 witnesses of God at all times and in all things,
and in all places" (Mosiah 18:9) as we strive to live the Young Women values,
which are:
Faith
Divine Nature
Individual Worth
Knowledge
Choice and Accountability
Good Works
Integrity
and Virtue
WE BELIEVE as we come to accept and act upon these values, WE WILL BE PREPARED to
strengthen home and family, make and keep sacred covenants, receive the ordinances of the temple, and enjoy the blessings of exaltation.
~~~~~~~~~~
Siempre el Lema de las Mujeres Jóvenes era muy bonito a mi pero cuando empecé a mi mision no sabía como decirlo en español con las mujeres jóvenes en mi barrio de español y en lo, encontré más sentimientos. Durante diciéndolo, tenemos el mismo propósito y nos ayuda a recordar que somos hijas de Dios y seguiremos a él.
SOMOS HIJAS de un Padre Celestial que nos ama y nosotras lo amamos a él.
SEREMOS "testigos de Dios en todo tiempo, en todas las cosas y en todo lugar" (Mosíah 18:9)
a medida que procuremos vivir de acuerdo con los valores de las Mujeres Jóvenes,
que son:
Fe
Naturaleza divina
Valor individual
Conocimiento
Elección y responsabilidad
Buenas obras
Integridad
Virtud
CREEMOS que al aceptar y poner en práctica
estos valores, ESTAREMOS PREPARADAS para
fortalecer el hogar y la familia, hacer convenios sagrados y cumplirlos,
recibir las ordenanzas del templo y
gozar de las bendiciones de la exaltación.
♥♫♪ City of Joseph, City Beautiful, City of Joseph, Nauvoo ♪♫♥
Today, during language study, I watched Joseph Smith: The Prophet of the Restoration, in Spanish. As I watched, once again, I was reminded of my favorite place in the world, Nauvoo. Then, I was talking with my companion about her favorite place and all I could think of was why I love Nauvoo. Why? I will tell you.
Nauvoo is a place of peace. It is filled with a spirit that is particularly special to this place. As you walk the streets of old Nauvoo, you can almost feel like you are back in time walking with the saints of the past. As I walk the streets the saints of old have walked, I am able to reflect on my own trials and see how different life is but, how we still need to be strong in our own faith. Two of my favorite spots in Nauvoo are the bank of the Mississippi and the temple. The bank because I can look west and think of how, in my own life, I need to keep looking forward during trials. The temple because it is a reminder of continually keeping my eye on things that are most important: following God's will. There's a statue in front of the temple of Joseph Smith, the prophet, and his brother, Hyrum, as they were leaving Nauvoo. This statue, with the temple in the background, is one of my favorite pictures because it encompasses all of Nauvoo in one moment. Life was hard and the saints gave up a lot to follow Christ and live what they believed but, they were blessed with so many blessings that we do not even know all about.
I hope that in a year and a half, I can return to Nauvoo to continue to strengthen my testimony of this gospel and reflect on my life. Everyone needs a place to reflect and re-evaluate where they are, whether it is mentally or physically. A place that leads us to God and helps us rededicate ourselves to him.
Think- where is your special place?
Conference Reflections - Refleciones de conferencia
This past weekend was General Conference for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As I listened to the inspired messages from apostles of the Lord, I felt uplifted and found answers to questions I was seeking. I am so grateful for a living prophet who receives revelation from God to help us. I love the scriptures but, I also love having revelations to help us in this world we live in. At times it is easy to become discouraged or lost but, through God, we can be lifted up. For anyone who missed conference, I'd like to invite you to go here and watch or read the messages.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Mother, Mom, Mommy. ♥ Madre, Mamá ♥

Today I watched a video about Mothers and Daughters and it gave me an idea to talk about why I am grateful for my mother. This video is filled with many young women talking about all the things they appreciate from their mothers.
~~~~~~~~~~~
I am grateful for my mother, or "mommy," because she has always been there for me. When I was in high school, she would stop what she was doing just to listen to me talk about my day as we both ate a bowl of ice cream. Even though we both hated it, we would go shopping together when I needed new clothes or something for school. When she says she will do something, she does it. At church, when she is asked to serve in some capacity, she always says yes and tries her best to do it the best she can. She does service for the family in little ways, well, they're actually pretty big: she cooks, cleans, does laundry, helps with homework, and teaches us how to do those things as well. When I went to college, I was so grateful for my mom making me learn how to do all sorts of chores because I was able to take care of myself and I knew how to have a clean apartment. I am grateful for my mom's testimony. When she shares what she believes to be true, you can feel it and see it in her face that she means it. She is not afraid to be herself. She is fun and loves to make everyone laugh by dancing around the kitchen as she sings and cleans or by making faces that look like animals. Whatever it is, she brings light and happiness to the room she is in.
In the world we live in today, so many people view motherhood as something negative. I feel otherwise. Mothers can be a wonderful thing and help us grow and learn how to be better followers of Christ. The home is a place where we can grow closer to God and have good values instilled in us to help us in our futures.
To learn the beliefs of the "Mormon" church, please read The Family: A Proclamation to the World. It talks about the divine roles of family members and the importance of families. (Para Español: http://www.lds.org/topics/family-proclamation?lang=spa)
Let us all take time to thank our mothers/fathers/friends who have influenced our lives for the better.
Just think- what would your life be without the things you are grateful for?
Exact Obedience - Obediencia exacta
This morning, I was studying my scriptures, when I came across the story of the 2,000 Stripling Warriors in the Book of Mormon. This story is about 2,000 young men who made a covenant to protect their families and their religion even if it meant death. They're courage has always been an example to me but, today, something new stood out. In Alma 57:21, it says,
"Yea, and they did obey and observe to perform every word of command with exactness; yea, and even according to their faith it was done unto them; and I did remember the words which they said unto me that their mothers had taught them."
lds.org
They were obedient and this is why they were blessed. Alma 58:39 says,
"And those sons of the people of Ammon,... and the Lord has supported them, yea, and kept them from falling by the sword, insomuch that even one soul has not been slain."
How amazing it that? Because of their exact obedience, they were blessed. There is a saying that says,
"Obedience brings blessings but, exact obedience brings miracles."
I hope one day the same about them can be said for me as is said in Alma 53:20 it says,
"And they were all young men, and they were exceedingly valiant for courage, and also for strength and activity; but behold, this was not all - they were men who were true at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted."
God has entrusted us to do His will. Many say how there are so many rules and how it is restricting but, I know that when we keep the commandments, we will be blessed. God promises to bless us and He always keeps His promises.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Reflecting - Reflejando

In the past 24 hours I have done a lot of reflecting on where my life has turned. Two years ago I was sitting at college wishing I could be going on a mission but, thinking I had several years until I could have the chance. I watched several friends leave and made new friends. Now, almost all of us are on missions. Some are getting ready to return, some have a while until then, some are just leaving, and some are still preparing. Life never goes as we plan. It is important to continually do what the Lord wants you to do and be prepared to change your plans to fit what the Lord has in mind.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
